How We Test
Our testing is designed around what actually fails in the real world: carriers that don’t fit the pet, don’t fit the rules, or don’t fit the human. We measure, simulate common journeys, and score against a standardized rubric.
Scoring Rubric (total 100)
- True‑Fit (30): Interior space mapped to pet measurements in curl/sphinx/seated, entry/exit ease, and escape prevention.
- Stability (20): Base rigidity, frame integrity, zipper strength, buckle reliability, and load balance while walking, climbing stairs, or stowing.
- Ventilation (15): Mesh area and placement, airflow paths when partially covered, and heat load under light activity.
- Cleanability (15): Removable liners, moisture barriers, odor control, soil release, and dry time.
- Human Ergonomics (20): Carry options (backpack/roller/shoulder), strap geometry, padding, weight distribution, trolley sleeves, and stowability.
Measurement Protocols
- Pet fit: We model interior clearances using your pet’s length, height, weight, and girth, then validate with fit dummies and cooperating pets representing common size ranges.
- Access: We time top/side loading, assess zipper track quality, and check lockable closures.
- Materials: We inspect mesh denier, fabric abrasion resistance, seam construction, hardware quality, and odor.
Mode‑Specific Procedures
- Air travel: We verify exterior dimensions, assess frame flex under seat‑like compression, and compare to airline‑published limits and aircraft notes. We document enforcement tips and boarding workflows.
- Car travel: We examine seat‑belt paths, anchor points, and crash‑test claims. We do not run crash tests; instead, we prioritize third‑party certifications and design features that integrate with restraints.
- Urban commute and foot travel: We evaluate balance, sway, step clearance, escalator/stair safety, and crowd navigation.
- Bike/trail: We check harness tether points, ventilation under exertion, and stability on uneven surfaces.
Temperament & Training We assess features for sensitive pets—privacy panels, quieter closures, chew resistance—and pair recommendations with acclimation routines, practice sessions, and motion‑sickness mitigation tips.
Verification & Updates
- Hands‑on vs. desk‑verified picks are labeled. Desk‑verified picks rely on corroborated specs, third‑party measurements, and consistent owner feedback.
- We re‑test when products change, airlines update limits, or we gather significant new field data. Change logs note what moved a score up or down.
Limitations No lab can replicate every pet or route. Our guidance reduces risk with clear trade‑offs and protocols, but you should always confirm current carrier specs, airline or transit rules, and retailer return policies before travel.
